Start/Stop: Pagosa Springs
I haven’t really talked about it much but the snow is out of control here. Remember all the rain we got in New Mexico? The Colorado snow pack increased more in the month of May than the whole winter combined. The San Juan Mountains (southern CO) are suddenly at 150% of normal. The rest of Colorado, maybe 100%. Avalanche danger is very real.
So the ideas are many. Flip up to Wyoming and then come back? Lower road alternates? Do Creede cutoff and then come back for the San Juans in September? Go southbound the AT? Nobo PCT? We just want to hike damn it.
Hikers are starting to make the section between Chama and Pagosa Springs. So, my group (Fun Size, Serena Williams, Mountain Spice, and Focus) is committed to gearing up and trying the Chama to Pagosa Springs section. I am confident that we will look out for each other and make good choices in these conditions.
